It's been almost a year ago since I met Juliet. Well I guess I haven't officially met her in person, but almost a year ago, I found Juliet through Compassion, a Christian child advocacy ministry and decided to sponsor her. I had always been skeptical about organizations like Compassion and I was never ready for the financial commitment.
Last summer I was feeling a tad lost within myself and I needed something outside of myself to hold onto... Juliet became a great outlet for me and I have loved supporting her and getting to know her. She lives with her mom and dad in Ghana... she doesn't need anyone to adopt her... but my money goes towards providing Juliet with more opportunities for bible teaching, health screening, vaccinations, social activities, etc. In reality, I've found it's not about the money (which they appreciate) and it's not about Compassion (which I think is a well-respected ministry) but it's so much more about the difference a child makes.
Every time I get a letter from Juliet, it makes my day. Almost 10 years old, she has drawn me pictures and written letters with questions and stories. They're never long, but I can't help but read them over and over again in an attempt to feel more connected to someone more than 5,000 miles away.
Yesterday was long... not necessarily bad long just long. I had a great time watching some MU guys play the Swamp Dogs and then celebrated Scrub Oaks anniversary with some friends from work. When I got home I was relieved to have mail from Juliet. Compassion provided her with a prompt letter for her to ask me questions, give me a prayer request and one of the coolest parts was... "Child's prayer for Sponsor." Juliet said, "I want God to protect you so that live long. Amen." Simple but heartfelt and just what I needed.
Juliet asked that I pray for her parents' work. I'd love it if you could also pray for Juliet and her family. The more people lifting her up, the better! The verse she sent me is Psalm 122:1 "I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go to the Lord's house.'" If only we could look at life through the lens of Juliet.

I will pray for Juliet and family. We got a letter today from Precious in Ghana. She goes to GH220, where does Juliet go? Our of all of our 6 Compassion kids, we get the most letters from Precious ~ just about one letter to us for every one we send. We aim to write all of our kids at least twice a month, so we get a LOT of letters! I also love that they send photos when we send Child and Family Gifts. Anyway, stumbled upon your post by searching for Compassion blogs. Glad to meet another sponsor of a child in Ghana!
ReplyDeleteJuliet goes to GH407. Thanks for your prayers and checking out my blog!
